- "In the Barbie Girls® world, you can create and decorate your virtual room, design an online character, play games, earn B Bucks®, have a B Chat™ with your friends, and more!" - Official description.
BarbieGirls.com was launched on April 24, 2007 by Mattel as a controlled community of registered users. The target market was 6-12 year old girls, and 200,000 users were registered after one week. Five million users were registered after 4 months, and it was considered the fastest growing virtual community in history, outpacing Second Life. A VIP subscription that cost $5.99 was later added that allowed users to access exclusive content. On special occasions, users could buy fashions, furniture and other things that were not usually available.
The website shut down on June 1, 2011, and the international Barbie Girls websites closed on April 30th. The websites closed because "the Barbie brand is exploring new opportunities where girls can experience the best of Barbie. We are committed to providing girls with the best play experience both on and offline." Refunds were given to people who had bought VIP memberships that were rendered unusable after the websites closed. Users were encouraged to download keepsake snapshots using the Games & Pics tab on BarbieGirls.com Three popular Barbie Girls games were still available on Barbie.com after BarbieGirls.com closed down
